Chessie System was formed through the 1972 mergers of Chesapeake & Ohio, Baltimore & Ohio, and Western Maryland. It remained one of the largest East coast railroads until 1986 when Seaboard System merged with Chessie to form todays rail giant, CSX Transportation. Railbox was established as a free-running nationwide pool of general service boxcars to help alleviate box car supply problems.
