From 1928 to 1943, nearly all German locomotive factories produced a total of 775 locomotives of this class for the Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft (DRG). These locomotives, each having 1.000 hp, were designed to reach a maximum speed of 70 to 80 km/h. This made them suitable for operation on both main and feeder lines, in addition to their primary use on branch lines.
By the early 1950s, 164 class 86 locomotives were still in service in the German Democratic Republic (GDR). In 1970, 162 locomotives were still assigned computerised running numbers but were ultimately withdrawn from service from 1973 onwards.
