Eighty-one 1700 series locomotives, a modernised version of the 1600 series, were procured between 1991 and 1994. They differ in the increased use of electronic components, a newer train control system, and a different braking system.
Locomotive 1753 was delivered by Alsthom in 1993. Until 2000, it was mainly used with double-deck trains. After that, the locomotive hauled domestic Intercity trains and international trains such as the IC Amsterdam – Berlin (to Bad Bentheim). The IC Den Haag – Venlo with ICk passenger coaches were also part of its service. Like most 1700s, the 1753 had no coat of arms.
